Hyderabad High Court finds fault with Suryapet district police action

The police had also seized Rs 2.4 lakh cash which was found in the lorry.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday found fault with the Suryapet district police for the seizure of Rs 2.4 lakh along with rice stock under the Essential Commodities Act.

Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao while dealing with a petition filed by one Annapureddy Sudhakar challenging the seizure of cash by the sub-inspector, Ananthagiri police station, Suryapet district, pointed out that the cash does not fall under the purview of essential commodity.

While directing the authorities to immediately release the cash, the judge directed the principal secretary, home, to take action against the sub-inspector.

The petitioner told the court that the police had seized the rice while he was transporting it in June this year on suspicion that it was from the public distribution system. The police had also seized Rs 2.4 lakh cash which was found in the lorry.

While suo moto implaeding the principal secretary, home, as respondent, the judge issued notices to the respondents directing them to file counter affidavits.
