Encephalitis case reported in Coimbatore

A resident of Vinayagapuram, Saravanampatti here, 21-year-old Ramya, was reported ill for the last few days.

COIMBATORE: In the backdrop of an increasing number of patients including children dying of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), also known as encephalitis in north India, the textile city reported its first casualty on Tuesday.

A resident of Vinayagapuram, Saravanampatti here, 21-year-old Ramya, was reported ill for the last few days. She was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH). Diagnosed of brain fever at the hospital, the young woman died on Tuesday, despite medical care.

AES is a medical condition that impacts the central nervous system. Children and young adults alike are vulnerable to the condition. The outbreak of the disease which is mostly reported during the monsoon season begins with high fever and impacts the neurological functions of the patient. According to health department sources, this virus normally enters the human body through dirty or polluted water.
