2 CRPF personnel killed in militant attack in Manipur

Guwahati: Two CRPF personnel were killed and two others injured in Manipur’s Bishnupur district following a blast at the paramilitary force’s outpost, the police informed.

The deceased CRPF men have been identified by the police as sub-inspector N. Sarkar and head constable Arup Saini. The incident took place at around 12:45 am on the intervening night of Friday-Saturday.

Security sources said that a group of suspected Kuki militants fired indiscriminately from a hillside in Naranseina village in Meitei-majority Bishnupur district towards a Central security force post in the valley area. The situation escalated when a bomb exploded inside the outpost, inflicting severe injuries on four personnel. Despite immediate medical attention, two security personnel succumbed to their injuries, while the other two are being treated at a hospital.

Security forces have cordoned off the area. According to sources, security agencies have started a further investigation into the incident, adding that insurgents in the hills used a primitive artillery weapon known as a “pumpi gun” during the assault.

A massive search operation was also launched to find the perpetrators of the attack, police said. The CRPF personnel were deployed to provide security to the IRBn (India Reserve Battalion) camp.

It is significant that this attack has come just six days before the first anniversary of the Manipur crisis that started last year.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a person was also killed in a village in Imphal East district after a heavy exchange of fire in the area last night. The victim was from the Meitei community and was killed at Sinam village in Imphal East district, at the border of Kangpokpi, security sources said.
