HYDERABAD: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday directed officials to speed up preparation of the detailed project report for construction of the 330-km Regional Ring Road beyond the Outer Ring Road. He asked officials to break the project up into multiple packages if needed but to ensure that it was completed in two years.
According to the plan, the Regional Ring Road will go through Bhongir, Choutuppal, Ibrahim-patnam, Shadnagar, Ch-evella, Shankarpally, Narsapur, Toopran, Gajwel and Jagadevpur. Mr Rao directed officials to study the best practices and latest technology being used in Europe and the US to construct all-weather roads (highways) in the state, he said. He insisted that the highways must be made accident-free.
“Reconstruct the roads to reduce sharp curves and take measures to ensure that the highways become accident free,” he said while expressing concern over the high number of accidents on state and national highways. Reviewing the status of highways, Mr Rao said the highways should be able to withstand extreme weather. “I am told that the road quality is good in Europe and the US. Study their practices and build roads that suit our weather conditions. The roads should last long,” he said. He told officials to build a vision document for 10 years.
He asked officials to categorise the 2,500 km roads which had been sanctioned by the Centre to be developed as national highways, and roads that would be widened with Central funds and those with state funds. Mr Rao told officials to build bypass roads; laying highways through villages and towns should be avoided.
