Telangana: Medication unchanged over time

Medicines for senior citizens can cost Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000 per month, which is a heavy financial burden.

Hyderabad: Review of medications which are being taken for high blood pressure, diabetes and other lifestyle ailments must be carried out yearly as it has been found that many patients take the same tablet for years and do not get their prescription reviewed. The review is important as patients are often found to be taking medicines that are no longer effective for them, and avoiding others because they are too expensive. Medicines for senior citizens can cost Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000 per month, which is a heavy financial burden.

Raza Mohammed of Helpage India said, “Due to these constraints it was found that many of them are unwilling to go to hospital. We have started mobile units for senior citizens so that they can get treated at home. There are 13 such units in Telangana.”Geriatric care-givers say that the comfort level of the patient is being given high priority by doctors now. They don’t want patients to become too weak or bedridden and advise them to be active and have a good quality of life.
