Hyderabad: Open defecation becomes history

Hyderabad has become free of open defecation, the GHMC has claimed.

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad has become free of open defecation, the GHMC has claimed. The city achieved this distinction after its corporators gave an undertaking that their respective wards were open defecation free (ODF). GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy issued a notification, declaring Hyderabad an open defecation free city. He has invited suggestions from the public.

As part of the Union government’s Swachh Survek-shan Mission, various other initiatives were also taken to curb open defecation. As part of this, toilets were provided to the residents and prefabricated toilets were provided in the slums.

“On the build-own and the transfer mode, construction of 44 public toilets is under progress and tenders have been floated for 25 others. Furthermore, the work is in progress for 25 SHE toilets. As part of GHMC's efforts to achieve the ODF status for the city, 295 fuel stations and 390 hotels have agreed to open their toilet facilities for the general publ-ic,”Janardhan Reddy said.
