Bengaluru: Bengaluru's legislators and MPs have suggested bringing in a new legislation for the BBMP to complement the existing Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976 that applies to the entire state. Deputy Chief Minister, Dr G Parameshwar, who chaired a meeting with the legislators and members of parliament from the city, told reporters here on Monday that the government would seriously consider the suggestion for a new legislation for the civic body as the problems faced by Bengaluru were quite different from those of other municipal corporations in the state.
Asked about the B S Patil committee report, which has suggested dividing Bengaluru into five administrative blocks, Dr Parameshwar said the proposed Act would not come in its way. "In the first place, the new Act has to be enacted. As far as the Patil committee report is concerned, we are still looking into it. Even if five corporations are carved out in Bengaluru for administrative reasons, it will still have to be governed by the new Act,'' he said. The Deputy CM, who is also Bengaluru Development Minister, added that the BBMP would soon start penalising plastic manufacturers and insist on removal of unauthorised bill boards. Besides, cables would be allowed on TenderSure roads only with permission.
The government had also decided to look at energy from waste and would shortly start one or two pilot projects, he revealed. Also, the city would soon have 5000 CCTV cameras as the government had received complete clearance for a Rs 650 crore project to install them under the Centrally sponsored Nirbhaya scheme, according to him. A proposal to light the entire city with LED bulbs was expected to be cleared soon as well. On the pourakarmika issue, Dr Parameshwar said those on BBMP rolls had been already paid and the contractors had to pay the rest.
