Monsoon advisory for Kodagu

During the monsoon last year, Kodagu was hit by major floods and landslides due to the highest rains in 118 years.

Mysuru: With the South-West Monsoon set to intensify in Kodagu region from June 20, the district administration has directed people in 13 vulnerable areas pointed out by Geographical Survey of India (GSI), to move to safer places.

The administration has also directed 415 families who are in houses which were partially damaged due to floods and landslides during the monsoon in the previous year, to move to safer places and will be depositing a rental amount of Rs 10,000 per month for the next three months in advance for them, according to Kodagu DC Ms Annies Kanmani Joy. All arrangements to begin 42 relief centres have been launched and activities will begin at one or two relief centres by June 19, she said.

Among 431 affected families, 54 people have expressed interest to build houses and their first instalment of Rs 2 lakh each has already been handed over to them.

The construction of 377 houses at a cost of Rs 9.85 lakh each is underway and they will be handed over to the victims by June end or the beginning of July, the Deputy Commissioner said.

The GSI has identified 105 sensitive/vulnerable places in Kodagu including 98 villages and five layouts in Madikeri town and the entire Virajpet town and Kushalnagar town area which are likely to be affected by heavy rains.

The Kodagu district administration has appointed 25 nodal officers and each nodal officer has been assigned the responsibility of a few areas to take elaborate precautionary measures to handle any emergency.

During the monsoon last year, Kodagu was hit by major floods and landslides due to the highest rains in 118 years. As many as 21 people died and 7,594 people were rescued and housed at 51 relief centres.
