Development trumps booze, cash in panchayat elections

Villagers set aside political affiliations, unite in interest of village

Adilabad: The gram panchayat elections are without much political fanfare and campaigning since villagers have decided whom they will vote in the interest of the development of their respective gram panchayats.

The influence of money and liquor may be less in these gram panchayat elections when compared to the recently concluded Assembly Elections.

The use of liquor and money is difficult in the panchyat elections, because people are closely linked, and often related. So, it is development and welfare that come to the fore to influence voters. Recently, TRS leaders asked villagers to elect candidates supported by the party if they wanted to receive benefits of welfare schemes being implemented by the state government.

Villagers are electing youth unanimously to the post of sarpanch apart from women in a large number, because the seats are reserved. Villagers also say that they unite setting aside their political affiliations when it comes to the issue of development especially in the case of a newly created gram panchayat.

Adivasi leader Godam Ganesh of Chinchughat village of Adilabad mandal said they were trying their best to elect the sarpanch, Upa-sarpanch and ward members unanimously in the interest of the development of the village, setting aside their political affiliations .

“This trend is quite visible in this ongoing elections for GPs,” he said. Congress and BJP parties have not yet begun their election campaign as their candidates to be fielded in the sarpanch post have yet to be decided. However, TRS has already begun campaigning in the villages.
