Hyderabad: RTC bus drivers struggle to find a loo

Depot officials say no space to build basic facilities.

Hyderabad: The lack of a toilet facility for RTC bus drivers and conductors at the Mehdipatnam terminus is forcing them to relieve themselves by the road sides. The plight of women staff is worse.

Mehdipatnam depot manager Krishna Mohan said the problem is years-old but the RTC did not have space to build toilets at the depot. “We have given a representation to the head office but there is no response,” he said.

At terminals like Secunderabad station, staff uses the toilets at nearby hotels. But at places like Rathifile, which have toilets, buses towards Uppal stop at a distance. The drivers do not have time to walk over to the complex, said Jubilee Bus Stand depot manager P. Shiva Krishna.

GHMC additional commissioner N Ravi Kiran said they would help the RTC in this regard if it made a representation.

Women conductors face bigger trouble. Terminals at Falaknuma, Secunderabad, Kushaiguda and Bandlaguda lack basic amenities for women, said Mr Md Kareem, an activist.

The solution, sources said, lay in the government installing the dry composting toilets.

Ms Lubna Sarwath of Save Our Urban Lakes said, “Every bus-stand should have washrooms and drinking water facility for everyone.”
