Hyderabad: 40 percent of 826 tanks and nalas are encroached

The Hussainsagarnala from Kachiguda to Tank Bund is 5.8 km in length and 881 buildings have been constructed on it.

Hyderabad: The GHMC has conducted a study on stormwater management in areas under its jurisdiction using Geospatial technology. They studied the Kukatpally nala, Nagamaiah Kunta and Hussainsagar nala. They used the Survey of India's topographical maps of 1970 as the basis. The survey showed that 40 per cent of the 826 tanks and many nalas in the GHMC have been encroached on partially or fully. They are preparing detailed reports on this study. The Hussainsagar nala from Kachiguda to Tank Bund is 5.8 km in length and 881 buildings have been constructed on it.

Between Himayatnagar and Ashoknagar, the original width of the Hussainsagar nala was 110 metres but at present, the width is only about 37 metres. The Kirloskar Committee had recommended that this nala has to be widened by 55 metres. There were two tanks at Nagamaiah Kunta near Ramnagar but one tank has disappeared and a major part of another tank has been encroached upon. The study identified encroachments along Kukatpally nala. At Nizampet, the Ambir Cheruvu has been largely encroached upon by several buildings.
