Petition against fee hike has many supporters

The Supreme Court in 2004 directed all the state governments to enact a fee regulation act and setting up a fee regulation committee.

Hyderabad: Support poured in for a petitioner from Mumbai who demanded a halt to profiteering and commercialisation of education. Anubha Sahai started an online petition against the fee hike, which got 118,958 supporters.

The petition demands regulation of fees in private schools.

The petition stated that private schools are hiking fees every year by up to 25 per cent and sometimes to an astronomical high of 200 per cent. They do not state the reasons behind the hike.

The Supreme Court in 2004 directed all the state governments to enact a fee regulation act and setting up a fee regulation committee.

Anubha Sahai said in her petition, “As a mother, I have struggled with fee hikes. As a lawyer I have been fighting court cases on behalf of aggrieved parents. Despite several SC judgments, only Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan have enacted the Act. Every state has a different fee regulation Act.”

Hridesh Gupta, a parent from Hyderabad, said, “This is a serious issue, which demands immediate attention by the government. The fees are hiked every year without any justification.”
