Osmania University's power cut leads to tension

These measures were adopted to evict non-boarders. But angry students marched up to the Vice chancellor's office.

HYDERABAD: Tension gripped Osmania University as the power supply for all messes and buildings including hostels was cut off at 7 pm on Saturday. These measures were adopted to evict non-boarders. But angry students marched up to the Vice chancellor’s office. Mr Avinash Reddy, one of the protesters, said, “How can they snatch away basic rights like electricity and water? What about students preparing for competitive exams or who stayed back for academic purposes? Do they all have to bear the brunt of this punishment apparently meted out to non-boarders?”

OU registrar Gopal Reddy said, “The students dispersed around 10 pm after we assured them that the power and water supply will not be disrupted till July 23. Non-boarders are a problem for the university but we decided to not upset the programme of other students because of them.”

Students claimed that the protest was still continuing and also that there was a lathi charge by the police. Police denied their presence in the campus. “No force had been deployed in the university. The Vice-Chancellor and other university authorities haven’t requested police protection,” said East Zone incharge DCP V. Satyanarayana.
