Big seminaries in Hyderabad offer higher Islamic studies

A few madrasas offer modern education along with Islamic education, particularly the Hifz course.

Hyderabad: A few big seminaries in the city offer courses that lead to the degrees of Maulvi, Alim, Kalim, Fazil and Mufti. All these degrees are conferred upon completion of courses of two to five years duration. These seminaries include Jamia Islamia Darul ul Uloom at Shivrampally, Jamia Nizamia, Shibligunj, and Jamia Sabeeul us Salaam.

Their campuses are spread over vast areas and their buildings are based on Islamic architecture. “Most small madrasas impart studies till Hifz memorisation of Quran. The bigger ones offer higher degrees,” says Maulana Salahuddin of Madrasa Anwari at Tallabkatta.

A few madrasas offer modern education along with Islamic education, particularly the Hifz course. “Parents want their children to become Hafiz by the time they complete their schooling. So, many schools are offering both Islamic and modern education,” says Maulana Hassan Farooqui.

These madrasas cum schools charge fees equivalent to other schools offering modern education.

Madrasas only for girls
The city also has several madrasas only for girls and women intending to pursue Islamic education. These are located at Saidabad, Moghalpura, Edi Bazaar and Kothapet. “Generally, there are no co-education madrasas at higher level. Separate institutions were started for girls, where only women teach various Islamic subjects,” says Mufti Mastan Ali, rector, Jamiat ul Mominath.
