Mayor and ex-mayor slug it out on poll eve

Duraisamy said he had nothing to do with the letter and alleged that it was former mayor who was involved in fraudulent activities.

Chennai: Former Chennai mayor and Saidapet DMK candidate Ma Subranamanian on Sunday alleged that present mayor and AIADMK heavyweight Saidai Duraisamy had been distributing letters written in his official letter head saying that he would take steps to issue patta to 721 families in Nehru Nagar in Velachery and asked the recipients of the letters to vote for his party candidate C Ponnaiyyan.

Countering the allegation, mayor Duraisamy said he had nothing to do with the letter and alleged that it was former mayor who was involved in fraudulent activities.

Subramanian had lodged a complaint with the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption and as well as the election commission. "The said act of Saidai Duraisamy is abuse of his office of Mayor for the purpose of gaining advantage to AIADMK candidate in the election," he said.

When contacted, mayor Sadai Dduraisamy, said he had nothing to do with such a letter. "I have not signed any such letter. I have nothing to do with it," he said. He also said it was former mayor Subramanian who was involved in fraudulent activities. "He had created fraudulent documents to show the properties situated in house number 3 and 4 in Labour Colony, Guindy are owned by his wife. He had also created fraudulent ration card to include certain people as member of his family ," alleged Duraisamy.
