Jisha murder case: CM Pinarayi Vijayan cheers recognition for government'

Govt's first decision was to form new probe team in Jisha case' .

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday that the court’s verdict in the Jisha murder case is a recognition for the government's uncompromising stand on ensuring women’s safety. When the LDF government took office on May 25, 2016, the first decision taken by the cabinet was to constitute a new investigation team to probe the Jisha case. The new SIT headed by ADGP B. Sandhya was asked to be impartial, judicious and free from all influences, he said in a statement.

The government gave top priority to the case because a hapless and innocent girl was subjected to gruesome rape and murder. “Our government’s objective was to carry out an effective investigation, catch the culprits and get them convicted,” he said. The SIT rose to the government’s expectations. It was due to the efficient investigation skills of the new team that the accused was arrested. The previous probe had become directionless.

The SIT did a great job in collecting evidence scientifically and the prosecution argued the case effectively. This was also outlined by the court, he said. The probe was carried out plugging all loopholes and in a free and fair manner. The prosecution worked assiduously resulting in the conviction of the accused, he said. The successful conviction also established that if the Kerala police are given the right environment, they can effectively crack down on the accused and nab them.

“I congratulate the special investigation team and the special prosecutor. While the SIT succeeded in nabbing the accused within 18 days, the prosecution filed the charge-sheet in 90 days,” he added. The investigations into the case and the verdict have sent out a strong message that those committing crimes against women would not get away with such acts. The government is committed to sternly curb atrocities against women, he pointed out.
