Telangana: Man tries to end life over Rs 500 notes

In his dying declaration, he stated that he had taken the step due to fear of losing money.

Mahabubabad: An autorickshaw driver attempted suicide over the invalidation of Rs 500 notes at Armoor late on Saturday night.

Mr Sheik Basheer, 35, of Maggidi, staying at Santoshnagar in Armoor, tried to kill himself as a private finance company staff did not accept Rs 500 notes towards installment payment of his autorickshaw loan.

Mr Basheer had taken a vehicle loan from Bajaj Finance two months ago and has regularly been repaying the installments. On Saturday he went to the company’s office in Armoor to pay Rs 6,000 in Rs 500 notes. But the staff refused them.

After returning home, Mr Basheer poured kerosene on himself on Saturday night and set himself alight. The family members rushed him to Armoor hospital with the help of neighbours following which he was shifted to the government hospital in Nizamabad where he is battling for his life.

In his dying declaration, he stated that he had taken the step due to fear of losing money.

Armoor circle inspector K. Seetharam said a case under Section 309 of IPC (attempt to commit suicide) had been registered against the driver.
