Water level in lower Kuttanad is rising

The level went up by 2 feet in low-lying areas of Kainakary, Pulinkunnu and Champakulam.

Alappuzha: The water level in the lower Kuttanad area is rising due to increased flow from Pampa and Achankovil rivers.

The level went up by 2 feet in low-lying areas of Kainakary, Pulinkunnu and Champakulam.

Low-lying areas of upper Kuttanad also remained inundated by heavy rains in Pathanamthitta district.

The shutters of dams of the Sabarigiri remained open contributing to the flooding in Pampa and Achankovil rivers. Kakki and Kochupampa dams are also releasing water in Pathanamthitta and Kollam districts.

People in the worst-affected Kainakary said irrigation the department started pumping in many areas of the panchayat from the paddy polders to protect houses. But, as the inflow increased, it stopped pumping to avoid bund breach.

Many areas here remain submerged for the past 60 days and all institutions, including schools and primary health centre, are underwater now. If the situation continues, the opening of the schools will delay, sending students into a dilemma. The district administration has issued an ultimatum to the padasekhra samithies to reconstruct breached outer bunds.

"A five-member committee was constituted for the evaluation of the functioning of the samithies," collector S, Suhas said. People have complained of samithies lagging the construction after receiving funds.
