CCTV cameras in Kozhikode defunct

Visits by VIPs put police in a spot as surveillance system fails to work.

KOZHIKODE: The absence of functioning CCTV camera at the major points is posing a big security threat during VIP visits to the city.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited here for the inauguration of Global Ayurveda Fest in the first week of February, and President Pranab Mukherjee is expected here to open the Gender Park month-end.

Footballers from across the world are playing at the Nagjee Football tournament currently.

Of the 76 CCTV cameras installed at key places, 67 went dysfunctional in just one and a half year. The rest are on the premises of BEM School, East Nadakkavu, Mofussil Bus Stand, YMCA East, YMCA (Kannur Road), Head Post Office, Kairali Theatre, English Church and Commissioner’s office.

Police sources say repeated requests to Keltron, which is bound to carry out the maintenance works, are being turned down. But the state-run firm says they don't get sufficient funds.

Since the maintenance contract is with a particular agency, an outside agency cannot do repairs. One of the most affected areas is the railway station.

Police officials said the visuals from the CCTV cameras were a primary source of information on various crimes, especially the incidents of theft there.

Mainly traffic issues and crimes on the road are tracked through these cameras. Railway officials said the issue of surveillance cameras had already been brought to the attention of the technical wing.

In addition to available cameras, proposals have also been forwarded to install a few more in other prominent locations, they said.
