Government to launch Internet radio station in March

The station will beam programmes for students on history, demography, literature and culture of Kerala.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a novel initiative, the information and public relations department will launch a radio station on internet platform to reach out to Malayalis across the globe by March. The new 24-hour radio station will disseminate vital information and infotainment programmes on government initiatives to the public quickly.

The station will beam programmes for students on history, demography, literature and culture of Kerala. The department will soon invite expression of interest for developing the application, webpage and software for the station.

A top official told DC that the project had got administrative sanction recently. "The internet radio will go on air within three months. Our plan is to make it an interactive platform so that the public will be able to raise their doubts and queries on various welfare schemes," said the official.

The project would be implemented in a cost-effective manner so that the department will be able to bear the running cost of the web radio.

"The electronic wing under the department is equipped to manage the web radio. We have a studio facility. The public will be able to drop their queries on WhatsApp, voice mail or as emails. The feedback on development projects and various schemes will be helpful for the government," said the official.

One of the main target groups will be school students. "There will be specific infotainment programmes to educate the younger generation on Kerala's culture and literature. There will also be programmes for non-resident Keralites all over the world," the official added.
