BBMP negligence claims 13-year-old's life

Priya reportedly sustained severe head injuries and later succumbed while undergoing treatment at a hospital.

BENGALURU: The cavalier attitude of government officials towards safety led to the death of a 13-year-old girl, while playing at a garden slide at BBMP Children’s park in MVJ Layout in Mahadevpura police station limits on Saturday evening. The deceased has been identified as Priya.

The slide was reportedly under construction, but there were no notice board warning about the dangers. A heavy metal rod supporting the structure, fell on Priya while she was playing with her friends. As she went down the slide the unfixed rod fell on her head.

Priya reportedly sustained severe head injuries and later succumbed while undergoing treatment at a hospital. Eyewitnesses said the incident took place at around 5.30 pm.

“It is a clear case of negligence on part of BBMP. They have kept playing equipment in the park while a few are being fixed. How would children know about the condition of the equipment, if there is no notice board,” one of the eyewitnesses said.

“A lot of play equipment are being kept in the park and the work on fixing them was underway. We have registered a complaint. It is too early to comment. Only after the completion of the investigation we can say who is at fault," the police said. Priya was the daughter of Subramani and Vijaya and was studying in eighth standard at a private school. It may be recalled that a similar incident was reported in December 2016 at Lalbagh. A six-year-old boy died after he was crushed to death when a bird bath made of stone fell on him in the Bonsai Garden. The Horticulture Department, which runs the park, was blamed for the child’s death.
