Corporation wants Kozhikode to be Smart

Council decides to participate in last round of Smart City Challenge.

Kozhikode: The corporation council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a supplementary agenda for participating in the last round of the Smart City Challenge.

The councillors pointed that Kozhikode is the largest city in Malabar and the hub of all cultural and economic activities. Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are already on the elite list under the prestigious national project.

The urban renewal and retrofitting program aims at developing 100 cities all over the country making them citizen friendly and sustainable under the Smart Cities Mission. P. Abdu Rahman, UDF councillor, said Kozhikode had all the qualifications to be included just like Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

"But we were ignored for lack of initiatives. The corporation must take an immediate stand to get onto the list," he said.

JDU councillor Thomas Mathew demanded an international stadium in the city.

“The major reason why we miss international or national sports events is lack of facilities," he said.

The council also passed 58 agendas and referred a few others to the corporation's secretary.
