Osmania University to seek cops help to evict non-boarders

Need to renovate hostels to provide better amenities to legitimate boarders.

Hyderabad: Osmania University plans to seek police help to evacuate non-boarders and has cautioned them that authorities would not step in and intervene in case of police raids.

A statement released by the University on Tuesday, stated that cutting off the power, water supply and seeking police help to evacuate the non-boarders are some tough decisions taken by the University administration.

Though University is taking tough decisions be it to renovate the hostels and to provide better amenities, to legitimate boarders. According to the administration, such strict measures will help in vacating the hostels also, will enable the administration to undertake the renovation work in the hostels as the hostels have come under a great strain and overcrowding has worsened the problem.

The administration also stated that renovation of the hostels is very important at this point of time as some hostels are in a dilapidated and deplorable state as they were built several decades back. They also stated that the University continues to bear the financial burden of power and water supply due to the non-boarders, though the regular courses are yet to start, barring any research activity.

Reacting to reports that the vacant faculty quarters are being occupied by unauthorised and illegal persons, the university has decided to snap power and water connections and deal with them for trespassing.

The university security has the record of the illegal stay by several people in the vacant faculty quarters which is the cause of nuisance and also unauthorised entry into campus and residential quarters.

A Senior official from Osmania University said, “We will only seek help of the police after warning the non-boarders and we have already urged them to move out voluntarily, if they don’t vacate hostels voluntarily then we will seek help of the police considering it as a last option.’’

The university has directed the university security and police to first issue a warning to all members and to lock the premises.
