3 workers hurt at Velagapudi site

Guntur: Three men involved in the construction of the temporary Secretariat at Velagapudi in the state capital region were injured on Monday when lightweight bricks fell on them from the first floor. They were immediately rushed to the NRI hospital for medical attention.

However, the incident sparked protests from others working on the site, demanding justice and safety for the workers. It may be recalled that two workers were killed in a freak mishap soon after work on the temporary Secretariat began.

CRDA Chief Engineer B. Jaya Ram Reddy said that they shifted the injured workers to the nearby NRI hospital for treatment.

The CRDA site engineer, who was looking into the issue, said that lightweight bricks which were placed on the sidewall on the first floor of the first block of the temporary secretariat, most probably blown by the wind.

At that time, the three workers were removing debris on the ground floor. The site engineer said that though safety helmets had been provided to the workers, they did not strap them on properly, hence received the injuries.

The injured workers were with the Shapoorji Pallonji construction firm. , the site engineer said, adding that they hailed from Bihar and Jharkhand.
