Ragging: Police create awareness

The parents should also keep a watch on their wards and if they find anything suspicious or a change in behaviour.

Bengaluru: As schools and colleges have reopened, the city police are creating awareness among students not to indulge in ragging or bullying the newly joined students, saying if they still go ahead with such activities they would be dealt with as per law.

The city police have released a video creating awareness on the ill-effects of ragging and also spreading a message that it is a crime to indulge in ragging, as it may lead to unknown consequences.

A senior police officer said, "We wanted to spread the message, as it is the right time, as schools and colleges have reopened and new students will join various institutions. Senior and old students should protect the new students and make them feel safe and comfortable, instead of indulging in ragging or bullying just to show that they are seniors."

He said, "We have increased patrolling near schools and colleges and have directed the staff to stay alert. We have observed that ragging and bullying does not take place inside the college, but outside. The hostel is also a vulnerable place, where such incidents take place. School and college authorities have been told to inform their wardens to keep an eye on such incidents and to inform the police immediately."

The parents should also keep a watch on their wards and if they find anything suspicious or a change in behaviour, they should take the help of counsellors and even talk to them to know what is happening, said another senior police officer.

The officer requested students to inform their parents or the police directly. "We will ensure that their information is kept confidential," he said.
