League to raise Rohith Vemula's issues

Ms Vemula told reporters that her family was facing constant threats from the forces opposed to the ideas propagated by her son.

Thiruvananthapuram: Indian Union Muslim League would raise in the Parliament the issues highlighted in the suicide note of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula, including the delay in disbursing scholarships and stipends to Dalits.

The assurance was given by IUML leader and social justice minister Dr M. K. Muneer to Radhika Vemula, the mother of Mr Vemula while visiting him at his official residence here on Thursday.

Later, Ms Vemula told reporters that her family was facing constant threats from the forces opposed to the ideas propagated by her son.

The propaganda that her son was not a Dalit was part of a concerted attempt to divert the whole issues to help those who were behind the incidents that led to the suicide of her son, she said.

Ms Vemula along with Raj Vemula Chaitanya Kumar, brother of Rohith Vemula, were in the town to attend the concluding ceremony of the Kerala Yatra led by IUML leader P. K. Kunhalikutty.

The impressive public meeting at Shangumughom beach here on Thursday, presided over by Muslim league state president Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, was addressed by a host of leaders.

IUML National general secretary K M Kader Mohideen inaugurated the meeting. CWC member A K Antony, chief minister Oommen Chandy and host of league leaders spoke on the occasion.

The Yatra which was flagged off on January 24 from Hosangadi in Kasargod covered all 14 districts. Kunhalikutty addressed scores of public meetings attended by over 8 lakh people across the state.
