HCU VC seeks quashing of abetment of Rohith Vemula's suicide

Hyderabad High Court directed Telangana Home Department to produce all records pertaining to Rohith Vemula suicide.

Hyderabad: Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar of the Hyderabad High Court on Thursday directed the Telangana Home department to produce all records pertaining to the suicide of Rohith Vemula including his suicide letter before it.

The judge was dealing with a petition by Mr Podile Appa Rao, vice-chancellor of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), seeking to quash a case registered against him for abetting the suicide of Vemula.

The counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that the alleged attack on ABVP leader and research scholar Susheel Kumar by members of Ambedkar Students Union and the subsequent suspension of Rohith Vemula and others took place prior to the petitioner taking charge as vice-chancellor.

He added that after taking charge on September 23, 2015 as V-C of UoH, the petitioner had taken steps to revoke the suspension of the scholars other than putting some restrictions on the movements inside the campus.

The counsel said that the petitioner had nothing to do with the suicide of Vemula and neither had the deceased named nor charged the petitioner for being responsible for his suicide in his letter.

When the counsel cited certain portions of the suicide letter to prove his contentions, the judge asked whether he had the suicide letter with him.

The counsel replied in the negative and said that he had extracted a relevant portion of the latter.

The judge then asked the counsel for the Home department to produce the records and the suicide letter and adjourned the case to February 17.
