Temple set to defy ritual ban

Over 700 police personnel will be deployed on the temple premises and about 50 surveillance cameras will be set up.

Alappuzha: The police have tightened the security around Chettikulangara Devi temple, Mavelikkara, where 26 children below 10 will be subjected to the banned ritual 'Chooral Muriyal,' a symbolic act of human sacrifice to appease goddess Bhadrakali, on Monday.

Over 700 police personnel will be deployed on the temple premises and about 50 surveillance cameras will be set up. A police control room was opened in the temple auditorium and a temporary watch tower was constructed.

Mr Anish V. Korah, deputy superintendent of police, Chengannur, said that notices had been served on the sponsors, Sreedevi Vilasam Hindu Matha Convention, and parents of the kids.

"If they conduct the ritual, we will register an FIR," he said. Though the ritual was banned by the High Court last year, it was held as usual. The police had registered an FIR, but did not follow up the matter.

The kids would be decked with traditional crown and plantain leaves from 6 a.m. on Monday and their skin would be pierced with a golden coil by the Asans. They would be taken to the temple in a colourful procession. The 'kettukazchas' from 13 areas will reach the temple around 4 p.m. After completing a round in the temple, the 'kettukazchas' will be arrayed in the 'kazchakandom' at 7.30 p.m.

The volunteers of Sreedevi Vilasam Hindu Matha Convention will be deployed for the smooth conduct of the ritual. While the ritual takes place, neither videography nor photography will be allowed, it was stated.
