Chennai: Dismissing a plea to create slaughter facilities in the state, the Madras High court directed the State government to take all steps to ensure that its order dated August 18 banning camel slaughter is not violated.
When the PIL came for hearing, the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan said “We make it clear that in-charge of the local police station would be personally responsible in case we find any violation of the order. This aspect be circulated to all the police stations concerned.
The Judges said “We are not inclined to entertain this petition for the simple reason that what it seeks in effect is nullification of the interim order passed by us on August 18 and other connected matters. The main writ petitions are already pending where we will examine all the issues and interim order has been granted only qua sacrifice of camels.
Jayesh, B. Dolia, counsel appearing for the Animal Welfare Board of India, submitted that camels have been still unauthorisedly brought into the State for sacrifice.
The judges said we are sure that the State government will take all steps to ensure that our order is not violated and we make it clear that the in-charge of the local police station would be personally responsible in case we find any violation of the order.
The petitioner sought creation of slaughter facilities as camels were slaughtered prior to Muslim festival of Bakrid, in public places.
