Heavy rains lash Hyderabad, clog roads

Some 17 locations reported power outages and tripping.

Hyderabad: The capital city woke up to heavy showers early Wednesday morning after a long dry spell. Hyderabad district was battered by a strong spell of rain from 4 am. Bandlaguda received eight cm of rain, the highest in the city. This was followed by Amber-pet, Mir Alam, LB Nagar and Ramachandrapu-ram.

The GHMC call centre received 104 complaints about fallen trees, water stagnation and overflowing manholes. The rain also brought down day temperatures. As usual, the day-long rains caused some damage to the roads and the civic infrastructure leading to gridlock in parts of the city. Some 17 locations reported power outages and tripping.

After the initial heavy downpour, there was light to moderate rain on and off throughout the day in the twin cities. According to the local weather bureau, rains are likely to continue for another 48 hours but with reduced intensity.

Monsoon day brings misery in twin cities
The day temperature hovered around 23 degrees; it has been over 31 degrees since the beginning of August. The city forecast for Thursday is generally cloudy skies with intermittent rainfall.

A broken manhole at Panjagutta Shanbhag Hotel interrupted traffic. Commuting came to a halt due to water stagnation at Gajularamaram Circle, the road underbridge at Lingampally-Seriling-ampally, Neredmet Crossroads, Malkajgiri, the railway bridge at 34 Talabchanchalam, Santoshnagar, Lakshm-inagar drain in Kapra Circle, Salarjung Museum in Pathergatti, Falaknuma, Nagole Junction, Engine Bowli, Pillar No. 190 Rajendr-anagar division, Sitara Hotel near LB Nagar, Asadbabanagar and Kishanbagh.

Since the beginning of August, Hyderabad has been mostly dry and humid with brief spells of rain. But Wednesday was a typical monsoon day. The total average rainfall recorded in a span of 24 hours was 18 mm, which is way behind the average monthly rainfall of 207 mm.
