Mysuru: Jumbo trapped in canal, wriggles to safety

The jumbo had strayed out of the park to graze in nearby fields and in the morning a few villagers sighted it and alerted the forest officials.

Mysuru: A jumbo had a harrowing time when it got trapped in an empty canal at a field in Kolavige on the periphery of Veeranahosahalli range of from Nagarhole National Park in Hunsur taluk of Mysuru on Tuesday morning. The animal, however, wriggled itself out of trouble to returned to the forest.

The trapped animal had spent a couple of hours in the canal before it managed to climbing the canal wall, much before the forest officials could bring a tamed elephant from an elephant camp to lift the trapped animal.

The jumbo had strayed out of the park to graze in nearby fields and in the morning a few villagers sighted it and alerted the forest officials. When forest officials and villagers tried to drive the jumbo back to the forest, it accidentally slipped to a canal connected to a water tank.

“The jumbo slid from the tank bund area to the canal,” said an eyewitness to Deccan Chronicle. As the news of the trapped jumbo spread, villagers began gathering and their screams and noise scared the trapped elephant.

When the trapped jumbo came out of the canal, forest officials opened a portion of the rail fence by removing nut and bolts and drew the animal back to the forest. “It did not sustain any injuries during its ordeal,” said a forest official who supervised the rescue effort.
