Telangana: Formation of districts faces opposition

In Mahbubabad, people held a protest demanding a separate district.

Warangal: The state government’s move towards forming new districts is not going well with people of Narsampet, Mahbubabad and Mulugu. Two more districts, Jangaon and Bhupalapalli are being planned from Warangal as part of the government’s idea to create 15 more districts from the already existing 10 districts.

The government aims to make governance easy by forming smaller districts but in some areas there were protests opposing some of the decisions taken in this matter. It is said that Narsampet would be included in the newly formed Bhupalapalli district.

Opposing this plan, Opposition parties, Congress, CPI, MCPI and CPIML have come forward and said the people of Narsampet would only suffer if this plan is executed.

“If Narsampet is included in Bhupalapalli, people have to travel 160 km to reach district headquarters. Currently, Warangal is just 35 km away,” said CPI division secretary Akkepalli Ramesh They held a protest and rasta roko on the main highway and handed over a representation to the RDO.

In Mahbubabad, district JAC members held a protest demanding a separate district. They said Mahbubabad has been in the forefront during agitation for Telangana and ignoring the people would result in bad consequences for Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.

“Mahbubabad is one of the fast growing centres competing with Warangal and Khammam. It has all the requirements to be a district centre. There is good road connectivity, an important railway junction and enough infrastructure for setting up government offices. It was in Mahbubabad, the agitation for separate Telangana gained momentum when the people defied everything to stop Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy pass by,” said TD district vice-president Bhupathi Mallaiah.

Tyres were burnt in protest and a rasta roko was held at the Mahbubabad centre.
In Mulugu too, there were protests from various sections demanding a separate tribal district. Leaders demanded tourism minister Chandulal to bring pressure on Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao to achieve a new district.
