Karnataka: BJP kicks up a ruckus over IAS officer Anurag Tiwari's death

Bengaluru: The BJP created a ruckus in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday over the recent death of IAS officer, Anurag Tewari in suspicious circumstances in Uttar Pradesh.

BJP senior leader, Jagadish Shettar, who is also leader of the opposition in the assembly, raised the issue soon after the House met, demanding that a debate be allowed on the adjournment motion moved by his party on the mysterious death of Mr Tewari. But Speaker K B Koliwad rejected the motion, saying the CBI was looking into the officer’s death.

Unwilling to take no for an answer Mr Shettar urged him to allow a preliminary submission and then take a call on whether to allow the debate or not. Mr Koliwad, however, remained adamant saying the House could not debate the matter as the officer had died in UP and its government had asked the CBI to inquire into it.

Angry BJP members then trooped into the well of the House, saying the Speaker could not reject the notice without hearing a preliminary submission on it. Giving in, Mr Koliwad allowed the preliminary submission, and Mr Shettar went on to say that when both the officer’s parents and brother were in Bengaluru, along with the UP SIT officials to investigate his death, it was the duty of the government, especially the Chief Minister to meet them and clear any suspicions they may have on his death.

Hearing him out, Mr Koliwad said he would allow a discussion on the issue in another form in the House.
