Gujarat: Passenger train engine catches fire; none injured

Technical glitches are suspected to having caused fire in the engine, officials said.

Ahmedabad: The engine of a passenger train on Thursday caught fire on its way from Ahmedabad to Botad causing delay by over an hour, though nobody was injured, a Western Railways official said.

The incident took place in the morning hours on a metre-gauge rail line,in the Ahmedabad-Botad inter-city train, he said.

"The engine of the Ahmedabad-Botad inter-city train caught fire between Dhandhuka and Taghdi railway stations, when it was on its way to Botad, in Bhavnagar division of Western Railways," senior PRO, Western Railways (Ahmedabad), Pradeep Sharma said.

"Technical glitches are suspected to having caused fire in the engine. The driver, suspecting fire, immediately decoupled the engine from the train, preventing its spread. Two fire tenders were called from Dhandhuka which doused the fire in nearly an hour," Sharma said.

The train was delayed by around an hour and a new engine was called in to carry the train to Botad, he said, adding that movement of no other trains were affected as the metre-gauge rail line is less busy.
