Cyclone expected to hit central Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam: Initial forecasts and national and international weather models, including the IMD’s numerical weather prediction, expect the brewing cyclone to cross the coast somewhere near central Andhra Pradesh.

Some meteorologists are expecting it to spare Andhra Pradesh. Retired meteorologist Rallapalli Murali Krishna said, “If the system truly intensifies into a cyclone, it may likely head towards Odisha, West Bengal or even further north.”

The depression over southeast Bay of Bengal, which is expected to strengthen into Cyclone Vardah in the next 48 hours was practically stationary on Wednesday.

The weather system is located 1,180 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, 1,210 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha). It is expected to bring some rain to AP on Saturday.

The IMD has apprised the governments of AP and neighbouring states. A control room has been set up at the Collectorate with the toll free number 1800-425-0001. On Wednesday, mostly dry weather prevailed over AP.

He directed civil supplies officials to ensure sufficient stocks of essential commodities. Police and NDRF forces were to be prepared for heavy rains and he asked Navy personnel to keep 20 rescue boats ready.
