Four reservoirs in Cauvery basin received not more than 50 per cent of normal inflow
Mysuru: Amidst the ongoing agitations in Mandya and Mysuru, authorities at KRS and Kabini reservoirs released 17,913 cusecs to Tamil Nadu at 12.10 am on Tuesday midnight. Hemavathi and Harangi reservoirs too have released a total of 11,888 cusecs water into the river leading to KRS, from where water will be released to Tamil Nadu. All four reservoirs together had a storage of 55.5 tmcft water on Wednesday.
The water level at KRS on Wednesday stood at 93.25 feet as against its capacity of 124.80 feet, the inflow was 2,000 cusecs and outflow 12,913 cusecs. Last year on the same day, the water level was 104 feet. It currently has 17.9 tmcft water.
At Kabini, the water level on Wednesday stood at 2275.80 feet as against its capacity of 2284 feet. The inflow was 1300 cusecs and outflow, 5000 cusecs. Last year on the same day, the water level stood at 2275.50 feet. It has 14.7 tmcft of water.
At Hemavathi the water level on Wednesday stood at 2893.93 feet as against its capacity of 2922 feet. While the inflow was 1191 cusecs, outflow into the river leading to KRS was 4,900 cusecs. Last year on the same day, the water level was 2902.41 feet. It currently has a storage of 16.2 tmcft.
At Harangi the water level on Wednesday was 2853.52 feet, as against its capacity of 2859 feet, while the inflow was 209 cusecs, outflow into the river leading to KRS was 6,988 cusecs. Last year on the same day the water level was 2851.42 feet. It currently has a storage of 6.7 tmcft.
According to Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, Dr G.S. Srinivas Reddy, the catchment areas of KRS, Hemavathi and Harangi reservoirs have recorded a 27 percent deficit during the South West Monsoon this year. Eighty percent of the catchment area of Kabini dam is in Wyanad in Kerala where the rainfall deficit was 59 per cent. The four reservoirs have not received more than 50 percent of the expected inflow this year.
