BENGALURU: City Mayor Sampath Raj has said that the work on the Shivananda Steel bridge has begun in January following an interim order by the high court.

Addressing the gathering after inspecting the controversial bridge, the Mayor said that the work order for the project was issued in June last year. However, it got delayed due legal hurdles put up by the local residents and a few associations, who are opposed to the project.

The steel bridge from Shivananda Circle till Race Course stretches about 485 metres and the project has been entrusted to MVR Infrastructure.

They have now been directed to complete the work at the earliest. The project is estimated to cost Rs 50 crore, including land acquisition cost, but now it will be completed within Rs 20 crore.

The bridge will ensure better connectivity towards West Bengaluru, including bus and railway stations, the Mayor added.

He pointed out that the Ring Road work near Katriguppe has been delayed by the contractor and he has been directed to complete it at the earliest.
