Kerala health minister orders high-level probe into young doctor's death by suicide

The doctor is believed to have taken the extreme step after her friend backed out of a marriage proposal allegedly due to the issue of dowry

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Minister Veena George has directed the director of the Women and Child Development department to investigate the suicide of a PG doctor at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and submit a report on the allegations that dowry was the reason behind his suicide.

Shahana, 26, a PG student in the surgery department of the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College was found dead in her apartment here on Tuesday morning. She had not reported for night duty at the hospital.

The young doctor is believed to have taken the extreme step after her friend backed out of a marriage proposal allegedly due to the issue of dowry.

The police had recovered a suicide note which was reported to be in Shahana's handwriting. The note said, "Everyone wants money, money triumphs everything."

Dr Shahana's relatives alleged that she took the extreme step after her doctor friend backed out of a marriage proposal due to dowry. The friend’s family allegedly demanded a huge dowry and told Shahana’s relatives that the marriage would not take place if they did not meet the demand.

Meanwhile, the medical college police have registered a case of unnatural death in connection with the incident.
