Hyderabad lake becomes illegal dumping of waste

The lake got a gate worth Rs 1 lakh a month ago but it did not stop the actions.

Hyderabad: Exactly a month ago, the Ibrahimpatnam lake got a gate worth Rs 1 lakh to prevent illegal dumping of waste. But residents say the money has gone waste as trucks enter and illegally dump waste anyway.

“The gate is never closed, just today we found a truck dumping construction debris on the bund slop in broad daylight,” said local resident Madhulika Chou-dhary. Domestic waste is being dumped and lake land is being encroached as well, she said.

“We have raised complaints with all officials concerned including the HMDA, the circle inspector, sarpanch and irrigation department. But nobody takes action,” she said.

Asked about the allegation, village sarpanch Ushesh Kumar said, “These trucks are unidentified and keep coming in at nights to dump waste into the lake.” The lake was slated for a makeover after local MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy and the gram panchayat had pooled funds to revamp its environs. The illegal dumping has damaged the plantation work around the bund.
