Mayiladuthurai: People run out for safety as building turns shaky

The building owner, one Ms. Naibunisha had rented out all the five houses and two shops on the ground floor

Mayiladuthurai: Tense moments prevailed at a village near here the whole of last night after occupants of a two-storied building urgently scampered out and camped at the roadside in the wake of their apartment complex developing an unusually long crack on one of its walls and a portion of the building beginning to slide down. The incident took place at Elanthangkudi near Mayiladuthurai in Nagapattinam district, police said on Friday.

The building owner, one Ms. Naibunisha had rented out all the five houses and two shops on the ground floor. All of a sudden, the inmates in panic rushed out with whatever valuables they could carry in hand to camp by the roadside on noticing an unusual crack on the building.

On information, Fire and Rescue Services department personnel rushed to the spot on Friday morning, removed the LPG cylinders from the housing area and helped the tenants to move their household articles to a safer place. They cut off the power connection to the apartments and sealed the entire building complex. Police said the building was constructed three years ago on a piece of wetland and the basement did not seem to be in the required strength and quality, which is believed to be the reason for the incident. Further investigations are on.
