Poor power infrastructure in Old Hyderabad

Residents complained that supply goes off without any information causing inconvenience.

Hyderabad: Despite the state government making arrangements to meet peak demand of 10,000 MW, several areas in the Old City are hit by frequent power outages.

Residents complained that supply goes off without any information causing inconvenience. “Power supply goes off even during the night. Sometimes it is restored immediately, but generally it takes at least two hours,” said social worker Mohd A. Moin.

Officials attributed this to local problems and overloaded lines. Capacity adding projects sanctioned remain on paper. Old City needs at least 10 more sub-stations of 33/11 KV and two of 220 and 132 KV.

Every month over 3,000 new connections are being released as old buildings are being replaced by residential and commercial complexes. The distribution infrastructure, however, has not been bolstered proportionately. Old City has 36 33/11 kv sub-stations that get supply from a 220 KV sub-station at Chandrayangutta and a 132 KV sub-station at Imli Bun which is being upgraded to 220 KV.

In all 19 sub-stations of 33/11 KV capacity, 132 kv and 220 kv have been sanctioned. Local MLAs with MP Asaduddin Owaisi helped Discom and Transco officials take possession of the project sites.

“Many new sub-stations have been sanctioned. Work on some of them is in progress. Yes, there has been a delay in their construction but we are following it up regularly with the officials,” said MIM floor leader, Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Discom officials said that at least five sub-stations of 33/11 kv would be commissioned within a year. Transco’s director (transmission) said that preliminary work to construct a 220 KV –sub-station and another of 132 kv has been completed.
