Excess rainfall: TN districts put on alert

The minister added that awareness would be spread and warnings issued through tandoras, the local press and TV channels.

Chennai: With Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting good northeast monsoon in the state, the officials concerned have instructed all district administrations to be alert and take precautionary measures.

Going by IMD’s prediction, the northeast monsoon would provide 12 per cent excessive rainfall than usual in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry.

IMD said that Tamil Nadu alone would account around 48 per cent annual rainfall wherein coastal districts receive 60 per cent of their annual rainfall.

After IMD and Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecast excessive rainfall, the state is gearing up to face any eventuality. Even R.B Udhayakumar, revenue and disaster management department, said that state is prepared to face any kind of onslaught that the monsoon may bring. After December 2015 Chennai floods which battered the city the northeast monsoon has become a worrying prospect for many in the state. “However, we are taking up monsoon-preparatory works and will continue to do so till the onset of monsoon.” Udhayakumar said, adding that training was provided to 30,759 first respondents including 9,162 women.

Dr S. Balachandran, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC, Chennai, said that according to IMD prediction, the rainfall would be 112 per cent of normal to above normal rainfall this monsoon season. However, one cannot predict if the October to December monsoon will be worse than previous rainfalls during northeast monsoon.The minister added that awareness would be spread and warnings issued through tandoras, the local press and TV channels.
