Fresh plea for Bharat Ratna to Pingali Venkaiah

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy paid glowing tributes to National Flag designer Pingali Venkayya on the prominent freedom fighter’s birth anniversary on Wednesday.

Taking to twitter, the Chief Minister said, “Pingali Venkayya participated in the freedom struggle at a young age. He fought for the country. Venkayya will always be remembered for his services to the nation.”

The ruling YSRC held a programme at the party state headquarters, remembering Venkayya at Tadepalli. YSRC general- secretary and MLC Appi Reddy and party leaders laid floral wreaths on the portrait of Venkayya. YSRC leaders recalled that the CM wrote a letter to the Union Government seeking Bharat Ratna to Pingali Venkayya.

Appi Reddy said Venkaiah signified the glory of Telugus by his designing of the National Flag.

Born in Bhatlapenumarru village near Machilipatnam, Pingali Venkayya had responded to Mahatma Gandhi's call and participated in the freedom struggle.

Navaratna executive vice chairman Narayana Murthy, SC Corporation chairman Kanaka Rao, Nayee Brahmana Corporation chairman Siddhavatam Yanadaiah and others participated in the programme.
