Hyderabad High Court moved to seek living entities' status for rivers

Rivers are getting polluted due to dumping of garbage, hazardous chemicals and animal wastes from slaughterhouses and hospitals.

Hyderabad: U. Deepya Chowdary, a law student, has moved the Hyderabad High Court urging it to declare rivers Penna, Krishna, Godavari, Vamsadhara and Nagavali and their tributaries and other streams flowing in AP and TS as living entities.

She told the court that these rivers cannot protect themselves and hence they must have the legal status of a living person with all corresponding rights in order to be preserved and conserved.

She submitted that these rivers are getting polluted due to dumping of garbage, hazardous chemicals and animal wastes from slaughterhouses and hospitals.

The petitioner urged the court to direct the both states to constitute a committee with Chief Secretaries of the two states to conserve these rivers and their tributaries and also take steps not cause obstructions to their natural flow.
