Bengaluru: Two Visvesvaraya Technological University circulars fuel confusion

It is with regard to processing fee as per the new One Time Exit Scheme.

Bengaluru: Two different circulars issued by the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), dated September 13 and September 21, have fuelled confusion among students and college authorities. It is with regard to processing fee as per the new One Time Exit Scheme.

As per September 13 notification, “Students who are registering for fifth or seventh semester under this scheme should pay a University Processing Fee of Rs 2,500 per semester at the college. The One Time Exit Scheme is applicable exclusively for Non-CBCS students who are ineligible to fifth and seventh semester during the year 2017-18.”

Some students had remitted amounts up to Rs 10,000 for four semesters at colleges, in the form of demand drafts and as hard cash.

Eight days later another circular was issued revising the processing fee downwards to Rs 500 per semester.

“This fee shall be submitted to the Registrar, VTU Belagavi, in the form of online payment to VTU Finance Officer. Excess processing fee collected by the colleges must be refunded,” notified Dr H.N. Jagannatha Reddy, Registrar, VTU, on September 21.

One of the parents, who had paid Rs 10,000 to an engineering college in the city said the officials refused to refund extra amount. “The college office asked us to contact the varsity officials, who in turn told us to get the refund processed by the college itself,” said Ramegowda, a parent.

Shravan Kumar, co-convener of VTU Students’ Struggle Committee told Deccan Chronicle that while some colleges have returned the DD and excess fee, a majority of others made ‘baseless excuses’.

“Some college officials claimed they are yet to receive the official notification from the varsity. As the circular is viewable to everyone on the official portal, such a response shows how irresponsible they are,” he said.

Shravan added that while some students are planning to raise the issue with VTU Registrar, others a planning to approach VTU regional office officials.
