Cauvery row: Made Gowda threatens to intensify agitation

He opposed the court's insistence on formation of the Cauvery Water Management Board.

Mysuru: Protesting against the Supreme Court order on release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu , farmers in Srirangapatna tried to force all Central government offices like the telecom and post office to shut down on Friday even as the head of the Cauvery Hitharakshana Vedike, G Madegowda threatened to intensify their agitation.

Insisting that CM Siddaramaiah stand by the resolution passed in the Assembly against release of water to TN, he opposed the court’s insistence on formation of the Cauvery Water Management Board.

Also coming down hard on the SC order, Sugarcane Growers Association president Kurbur Shanthakumar too warned that farmers would intensify their protest if water was released to TN .

Pointing out that the state had no water for irrigating 6.2 lakh acres of cultivated land, he said, “Let them help our farmers instead of releasing water to Tamil Nadu.” Recalling that there was a petition pending before the SC against the formation of Cauvery Water Management Board, that was filed in 2007, he said a mega rally would be held to discuss the issue next week.
