Hold officials responsible for borewell deaths in Telangana: PIL

Mr Prakash urged the court to direct the state government to acquire district wise details of such defunct borewells.

Hyderabad: A PIL has been moved before the Hyderabad High Court seeking to hold the officers and people concerned who failed to take care of unfilled and defunct borewells and impose heavy penalty on them.

B. Prakash, a practicing advocate of the High Court, moved the PIL bringing to the notice of the court the guidelines and directions given by the Supreme Court in this regard.

He submitted that the Supreme Court had given a series of directions for each state and local authority to follow, but no one was implementing them.

While citing the recent tragic death of Chinnari, a toddler who fell into a 40 foot uncovered borewell in Vikarabad, Mr Prakash said people were supposed to obtain prior permission before digging.

He urged the court to direct the state government to acquire district wise details of such defunct borewells and also take steps to prevent further deaths apart from compensating the families of the deceased toddlers.
