Thrissur: The 10th death anniversary of Kamala Surayya was observed at Neer-mathala Bhoomi, the Kamala Surayya memorial, at Punnayurkulam here on Friday. Several well-known personalities in the cultural sphere attended a meeting organized by Kerala Sahithya Akademi at the memorial.
Akademi president Vaisakhan, who spoke, said that writer Kamala Surayya aka Madhavikutty would be remembered as long as languages exist.
“Her creativity and style in writing produced a feeling of tenderness in the readers. Her writing was an extension of the life in ‘Vannerinadu,’ the region spread across the border of Thrissur and Malappuram, including her native Punnayur-kulam. The depiction of this region made her writing popular,” he said.
Communist thinker K.E.N Kunjahammed said that Kamala Surayya represented the diversity of Malayali’s spirit.
“She experienced the loneliness within social relationships. She was severely criticised for accepting Islam, but her religion was poetry,” he noted.
Chavakkad MLA K.V. Abdul Khader said that she was controversial in her writings, language and imagination. “But her writings are everlasting,” he added.
Dr Suvarna Nalapat, actor and writer V.K. Sreeraman, Dr Khadeeja Mumtaz, and akademi secretary P.K. Mohanan among others took part in the meeting.
