Karnataka: 21-year-old sexually assaulted

Accused videograph the act, rob her friend.

BENGALURU: A gang of five men allegedly sexually assaulted a 21-year-old woman and videographed the act at knife point and also robbed her friend of his gold chain, while they had gone to a birthday party of their friend at Brindavan Layout in Kaggalipura on May 14. The police on Friday arrested the five men from Kumbalgodu in connection with the incident.

The arrested have been identified as Sharad Yadav, 21, Hanumantha Raju alias Sarai Raju, 22, Uday, 22, Manu, 24 and Hairsh, 24. All were working as auto-rickshaw drivers and cable TV operators. During interrogation they confessed to the crime and were booked for rape, robbery and criminal intimidation, and remanded to judicial custody.

According to the police, the victim, a resident of Srirampura along with her friend had gone to a birthday party of their friend to Brindavan Layout on May 11. As there was another birthday to attend on May 14, the survivor stayed over.

In her complaint to the police, the survivor, who works in a private firm, stated that she along with her friend had gone to a friend’s birthday celebrations on May 11 in Anchepalya on the city outskirts around 8 pm. While the friends were eating dinner at a hotel the accused youths noticed her and passed lewd comments. The survivor’s friend, Naveen, along with other friends, told them not to misbehave and left, police said.

Later Yadav and Raju followed them to their house and waited for the other three to join them. Around 9.30 pm they barged inside the house, threatened the survivor at knife point and sexually assaulted her. They even videographed the act and frightened her to silence. They threatened to upload the video on internet and social media platforms if she reported the police. The accused then robbed a 21 gram gold chain and wallet from Naveen and fled, police said.

The survivor, along with friend Naveen and other friends went to Kaggalipura police station and lodged a complaint. The police formed a special team and tracked the mobile call data records to zero in on the accused. “The accused have other cases pending against them in Thalaghattapura and Bidadi police stations,” the police said. Kaggalipura police have registered a case.
