Tamil Nadu: 7 teenagers hurt in freak mishap

Three of them were operated upon, while the others are being treated conservatively.

Chennai: Seven teenagers injured in a freak accident near Pandur village in Tiruvallur on Thursday are recuperating at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in the city. “Three of them were operated upon, while the others are being treated conservatively. They are all admitted to the surgical ICU and are now stable,” said a source at the hospital.

“Two of them were amputated upon,” added the source. The seven teenagers, including five schoolgirls, were injured when a van driver, while trying to avoid a collision with a two-wheeler, ploughed into group of school children waiting at the bus stop on Thursday evening. The injured have been identified as Sheeba (14), Sowmya (15), Bharathi (14), Suneetha (12), Shiny (10), and P. Thulasi Raman (16) who was riding a moped and his friend P. Pooarasan (16) riding pillion.

Sheeba and Suneetha sustained injures on their right leg, while Sowmiya sustained injures on her right hand. Police said two-wheeler rider Thulasi did not have licence. Van driver R. Saravanan (27) was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
